Mecelec Design has designed and developed a heat and head process for medium calibre projectiles in the size range from 105mm to 155mm.
The process takes forged and rough machined projectile blanks and heats them sufficiently for the conical end to be formed in a hydraulic heading machine. Projectiles are lifted into a purpose-designed induction coil while being rotated to ensure an even temperature distribution.
Heating of the projectile from ambient to 1100°C is carried out in approximately 45 seconds, after which unloading into the heading machine is carried out by a six-axis robot.
