ATEX and explosive atmospheres
Explosive atmospheres in the workplace can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts. Explosions can cause loss of life and serious injuries as well as significant damage.
The pages found on the link to the Health and Safety Executive website below will tell you more about explosive atmospheres and the ATEX directive.
Mecelec Design has engineered numerous machines designed for use within ATEX-classified areas, including vapours, dust and gas-contaminated areas. Here are some examples of ATEX certification:
ATEX dust-certified equipment has been supplied to dispense explosive powders and granules. Some equipment is within operator areas and some within fully automated blast-proof rooms.
ATEX gas-certified equipment has been supplied to work in areas where kerosene or aviation fuel is being used as a test medium, with the risk of an explosive gas atmosphere being present surrounding the equipment under test.
Various protection strategies are employed within the equipment to comply with ATEX requirements.
This includes explosion-proof electric motors and terminal boxes used for high voltage equipment.
For low voltage sensors and measuring transducers, intrinsically safe barriers are employed between the hazardous area and the control equipment in the safe area.
For some customers we have manufactured special pressurised, explosion-proof, full size electrical cabinets which have been fully certified by external certification agencies for safe use in ATEX-rated environments.
Mecelec Design Ltd will be very pleased to support your ATEX-related projects and, if required, can provide consultancy services to evaluate your particular requirement.
